For decades, the "Airport Experience" has been synonymous with a ₹250 cup of tea and a ₹400 sandwich. But a massive shift is happening across Indian terminals. A new initiative, sparked by public demand and government action, is finally bringing "Aam Aadmi" prices to the departure gates.
From Kolkata to Pune and now expanding nationwide, the UDAN Yatri Cafe is becoming the most talked-about spot for travelers, offering tea for just ₹10 and snacks starting at ₹20.
The Man Behind the Mission.
While the cafes are operated by private partners under the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the momentum for this change gained traction in Parliament. MP Raghav Chadha made headlines by challenging the "exorbitant" pricing of airport food, questioning why a bottle of water should cost ₹100.
Following this push, the Ministry of Civil Aviation, led by Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, launched the pilot project at Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. The result? A runaway success that has seen nearly 1,000 customers daily.
Menu Prices That Shock Travelers
The price list at these cafes looks more like a local street stall than an international airport lounge, providing a massive relief to middle-class flyers:
Tea: ₹10
Water Bottle: ₹10
Coffee: ₹20
Samosa: ₹20
Sweets/Snacks: ₹20
"I thought it was a joke or a hidden camera show," says Piyush Tripathi, a traveler whose video of the Pune Airport cafe recently went viral. "Getting a hot samosa for 20 rupees inside an airport feels like a victory for the common man."
Why This Matters
For years, the high cost of food at airports was seen as a "luxury tax." However, as air travel becomes a necessity for millions of middle-class Indians, the lack of affordable options became a major pain point.
The UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme was originally designed to make flights cheaper; the UDAN Yatri Cafe extends that philosophy to the terminal floor.
Where Can You Find Them?
After the massive success in Kolkata, the government has rapidly expanded the initiative to:
1. Chennai International Airport
2. Ahmedabad (SVPI) Airport
3. Pune International Airport
Upcoming: Plans are underway to bring these budget canteens to Delhi, Mumbai, and other major hubs across India.
The Verdict
The UDAN Yatri Cafe proves that quality and affordability can coexist in high-end spaces. By catering to the "common man," these outlets are not just selling tea—they are reclaiming the airport space for every Indian traveler.
